Chihuly & his Pink Truck

People who know Dale Chihuly are familiar with his penchant for cars. When I first represented is artwork in Tokyo, he shared with me his preference for Aston Martins. I remember that as a young art dealer in Japan in the late 80’s, I tried to impress him and managed to rent one to pick him up at the Narita airport. Later, when I worked on the Museum of Glass' development in the 90’s, Dale drove a pink pick-up truck with a bumper sticker, “Visualize Tacoma.” You could say that as an artist, he was ahead of his time for selecting that color on a truck - masculine and feminine rolled into one. In my opinion, he simply embraced the entire spectrum of colors.

This month in March, I will be showing artworks and sharing stories of the magic Chihuly created in the days leading up to his explosion in the global art scene. The 1980’s and 90’s were when most of his art innovation occurred.
