Caitlin Berndt’s many-layered paintings are representative of an inner struggle to reconcile the traditional values and naivety of youth with a sexually saturated contemporary world. In the ethos of Berndt’s painted universe, the outwardly sex-positive and open attitudes of her subjects are almost always countered with a literal wash of doubt. Psychologically steeped narratives alluding to lingering sex-centric anxiety are transparently layered over one another to compose a palimpsest of confidence tempered with hesitation.
Berndt holds an MFA from the University of Washington, and has also studied art in Israel, Spain, Italy, and Maryland. She lives and works in Brooklyn, New York
